Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University is the one of the largest higher-education institutions in western Ukraine and regularly ranks among the country’s top ten universities. Established in 1940, it now serves more than 17,000 students and employs over 1,500 staff members.

The university combines a strong regional role with a European outlook. Its academic structure includes 15 faculties and institutes, 77 departments, and a college, offering more than 150 educational programs in law, political science, economics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, information technology, foreign languages, physical education, pedagogy, history, management, and other fields.

Research and innovation are at the core of its mission. Seventeen scientific centres, along with four institutes, four specialized laboratories, and two interdepartmental labs, facilitate advanced research and technology transfer, contributing to the scientific and economic development of the Carpathian region. The university actively promotes internationalization through partnerships with over 50 foreign universities, participation in Horizon and Erasmus+ programs, dual-degree initiatives, and involvement in major research and infrastructure projects.

At the outset of Russia’s unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University actively supported cybersecurity efforts. It implemented additional security measures to protect its servers and helped colleagues at Kherson State University transfer critical data from occupied areas to secure locations under Ukrainian control. These actions demonstrated the university’s commitment to operational resilience, national cybersecurity, and knowledge exchange during a time of crisis.
